Now that you’ve found a hosting provider and got your website out there, you need to start taking action to get people to actually visit it.

There are a lot of things you can do in order to achieve this. Some cost a lot of money, others will cost you mostly time. Below are the basics for getting visitors to your site.

1. Proper Research

Before you do any marketing activity, you need to spend time on research. Everything you do after that will be based on the information you gather in this step.

These are the things you’ll want to research:

• Industry

What industry are you in? Who are the big players in this industry? What websites and blogs are the most popular? This information will help you get a better idea of where your company is situated, how to approach your audience, and what blogs and websites you want to keep an eye on.

• Audience

You need to know who you’re targeting in order to do it right. Don’t ever say that your audience is “everyone”. Start with a small group that you know would be interested in your product or service and get to know them very well. What blogs do they follow? What are their interests? What content do they like and what do they hate?

• Competitors

Know your competitors so that you can learn from their successes and mistakes. What social networks are they on? What are people saying about them? What is their content like? Look at their websites, their keywords, their traffic, so that you can learn how to create your own strategy.

2. Blogging

Create a blog and post interesting articles on a regular basis. The articles should be interesting to your target audience and relevant to your business and service. Look at your competitors’ blogs, as well as online news sites in your industry to see what topics are trending.

3. Social Networks

Just like having a website doesn’t guarantee you get any traffic, same goes for having a blog. You have to share your articles and get people to discover you. This is done by posting regularly on social networks and forums like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Reddit, LinkedIn, and more. Find the networks that are best for your target audience and create a posting strategy that includes a combination of your own content, content curation, and interesting posts without links.

4. Guest Blogging

Guest posts are the best and fastest way to get people to your website without having to spend thousands on advertising and paid promotions. It will take a lot of time on your part and a lot of research, but it is well worth the effort.

First, start by creating a list of large and small blogs and websites in your niche that accept guest posts. Then, take a look at their content and think of articles that would fit their audience. Send them an email or article, depending on their guidelines, to get your content posted.

5. SEO

We don’t have anywhere near enough space to get into the details of SEO strategy. We’ll publish an SEO series in the near future, but for now be aware that this is something you can’t ignore, and that will pay long term dividends if you invest time and effort. Modern SEO is not anything like as complicated as you think it is, and the web abounds with great, easy to understand guides to get you started.

      Hi Alicyn,
Good luck with your new blog!
Unless you have plans to turn your blog into a media empire, it’s definitely worth considering a website builder like Wix or Sitebuilder.com. These make it easy to create, update and manage your website, and include hosting, domain and other freebies as part of the package.
If you’d rather have the freedom of a hosting service, take a look at BoldGrid. It’s a drag-and-drop website editor built on WordPress, which you can use when you sign up with inmotion hosting. You get the best of both worlds that way.

      Best,
      Lisa

Hey Lisa, thanks for sharing the tips. How often should I post new articles on my blog and Facebook page to attract more people? My website is hosted with DreamHost and I am not sure whether it was a good choice. What hosting company would you recommend for blog about movies? I truly appreciate your help. Angela

      Hi Angela,

If you’re looking to build a following, I’d suggest a minimum of one blog post per week, but I wouldn’t go more than twice per week at this stage. You want a good balance to ensure the quality is high without having people wait so long for a new post that they forget about you. You could always add other types of content – quick lists of your favorite genre movies, interesting trailers, and so on.
As for social media, I’d recommend opening G+ and Twitter accounts too, with more frequent posts on Twitter (maybe once or twice per day) and fewer on the other two. Of course, always post on social media when you have a new blog up, but also post links to interesting articles, throw out questions and quizzes to your followers, and so on.
When it comes to hosting, any of our top three come highly recommended. If you’re looking for a more user-friendly product, you could try BoldGrid from inmotion. It combines the best of website builders with top-notch hosting. Here’s our review: http://top5-websitebuilders.com/reviews/boldgrid/.

      Best of luck!
