If your website loads slowly it could break your online business, no matter how beautiful your site or how low your prices. Speeding up your website should be one of your top priorities.
According to the Aberdeen Group, a one second delay in page loads led to a 7% loss in conversions. Meanwhile, Amazon reported that for every 100 milliseconds of speed improvement, they had a 1% increase of revenue, and Walmart found a 2% increase in conversion for every 1 second of speed improvement.
Here are a few tips to improve page load speeds and speed up your website:
1. Optimize Images
Make sure that the images on your website are no bigger than they need to be in order to ensure speedy loading times. Always resize and crop your images to the correct size.
2. Reduce Unnecessary Code
If you’re using a WYSIWYG platform to create your website, you need to make sure that you aren’t adding unnecessary code (spaces, line breaks, etc.), which can slow down your site.
3. Reduce Plugins
Too many plugins can slow things down, so don’t use and install any that you don’t really need.
4. Reduce Redirects
Redirects increase load time and in responsive websites you’ll have redirects to take people to the right website for their device. Google recommends using an HTTP redirect to send users directly to a mobile URL.
5. Server Time
Use tools provided by Google or other online resources to analyze your server response time and locate areas that you can optimize for better performance.
